Nobody likes to be around an ill-mannered dog. Wait, what? Did I say an ill-mannered dog?
We all know dogs for their love, loyalty, and true-heartedness, but dogs can be rude too. Do you remember when the last time your neighbors visited and your doggo embarrassed you by pulling the leash away and unnecessary jumping?
Ugh!!! That was awkward.
To help you deal with such unpleasant situations, I created a list of five basic commands that every dog owner must know.
Let’s start.
1. Sit:
Has your dog become a door dasher? Make your life easy by training him with the ‘Sit’ command.
Treats are a GREAT way to make your four-legged obedient. Grab some of your dog’s favorite treats and begin:
- Hold the treat close to your dog’s nose and let him smell the aroma.
- Move the hand from above his nose to his tail. Your dog will track the movement of your hand and might naturally sit.
- As soon as your doggo’s butt touches the ground, it’s time to reward.
Keep repeating the process until your dog masters it.
2. Down:
Once your dog learns to sit, it means he’s ready to move to some harder commands.
‘Down’ position is good for dogs, especially; if your dog is super energetic and never lies down to relax.
- Start with the sit command. When your dog is seated, touch the tasty treat with his nose and slowly bring it to the floor. Politely say ‘Down’ while you move the treat.
- When he lies down, praise his success, and offer a treat.
‘Down’ command helps in building up self-control and nourishes a calmer attitude. Do it over, again, and again till your dog is good enough to understand the command at once.
3. Stay:
Are you concerned about your dog’s bossy behavior? No worries! ‘Stay’ cue will help you get control over your dog.
- Tell him to sit first.
- Then, open the palm of your hand, and with this verbal gesture, command him to ‘Stay.’
- Take a few steps back. If your dog stays, leave him for 30 seconds in the ‘Stay’ position.
And did I say, shower him with gentle petting?
Continue the practice until your dog becomes an expert.
4. Come:
When you are hanging out with your dog, he, out of excitement, can pull the leash off and getaway. It’s vital to teach your dog the ‘Come’ command
to avoid such accidents,
This command is super easy to teach.
- Put a collar and leash on your dog.
- Squat a little and equate your dog’s level. Say ‘come’ and gently pull the leash.
- As your dog moves towards you, give a pat on his back and give him his reward treat to nibble.
Once your dog is skillful enough that you can remove the collar and leash, go with your guts.
Take them off and carry on the drill.
5. Off:
Dogs are eager creatures. They can start jumping and climbing up the furniture anytime, and what sparked their eagerness, you’ll never know.
To eliminate this inappropriate manner, you have to teach them the ‘Off’ command.
- Fill up your hands with treats, show the treats to your dogs, and take them away.
- Instruct them to get ‘Off’ and turn your body away. The sole purpose of the unneeded jumping of your dog is to have your attention. When they see you turn your back, they will stop creating a fuss.
Go on with the training up to a time your dog becomes proficient.
Final Thoughts:
Transforming your bad boy into a well-behaved dog is nothing impossible. All you have to do is be patient and remember the 3 Ps while training.
3 Ps?
Oh, that means, Practice, practice, and practice!
